Laguna Riviera, Charm that Stands the Test of Time
The story of Laguna Riviera dates back to 1914, when only a few homes and stores dotted the hillsides of
Laguna Beach. It was then that a family, The Williats, from Los Angeles fell in
love with this beachside community and decided to build a home. Then in 1938,
when visiting Laguna Beach they decided to make a permanent move and bought the
Brickles Farm House, which was the future site of Laguna Riviera. In the ‘50s
and ‘60s Laguna Riviera took shape to what guests now know and love. The mid-century
architecture that is reminiscent of a cruise ship came out of the Williat’s love
for travel. They chose to build the hotel that way, so when one stands out on
one of the terraced decks pointing out toward
the ocean, you are able to gaze out at a
spectacular unobstructed view.
As Laguna Beach became popular with the Hollywood crowd in
the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s, many celebrities began frequenting Laguna Riviera. One
of their most noted guests was Hanna Barbara. The current owner and grandson of
original owners, Kort Pearson, remembers Hanna doing Yogi Bear impersonations while
visiting to entertain the guests. Author Pearl S. Buck wrote several of her
novels from the deck off of room 508. President Richard Nixon was also a
frequent guest of the hotel before and after he became president.
The sense that I got when visiting Laguna Riviera was that
the guests who return year after year to the hotel are the ones that the owners
truly cherish. “People became my friends
when we were kids because they came here with their parents year after year.
They came here for 10-15 years and then we all went away to college. Then 10
years later they began showing up with their kids. Literally people have been
coming here for 50 years,” says Kort Pearson. In fact, families become attached
to certain rooms and book their reservations a year in advance to ensure they
get the same room year after year. That’s the kind of special place Laguna
Riviera holds in the hearts of its many guests.
Laguna Riviera has just over 40 rooms, many with ocean
views, private decks and kitchens. As a guest you receive complimentary continental
breakfast, free WiFi and HBO. You also have direct access to the beach with
complimentary chairs, towels and umbrellas.
If you have a larger party and are looking for a more
intimate and private stay, you can rent the Beach Bungalow. This is a free
standing 1,500 sq. ft. house built in 1932 that still retains much of its
original charm (original handcrafted front door, fire places and a custom built-in
china hutch) with all the modern conveniences you would expect. You have
panoramic views of the ocean from the living room, and a private deck from
which you can feel the spray of the waves crashing below you.
With its rich history, Laguna Riviera is a place that you
grow nostalgic for and yearn to return to. It is the instilled memories of long
summer days and the sound of crashing waves lulling you to sleep that keep
bringing people back to Laguna Riviera year after year.

Guests can nosh on casual beach fare, sip on freshly made cocktails, or catch a sunset. Retro Charm Discovered at The Tides Inn
The charm of Laguna Beach
comes to life at the Tides Inn. Here owners Linda
and Dale have created a quaint hideaway in North Laguna that still remains one
of Laguna’s best-kept secrets.
The Tides Inn sits on an
unassuming strip along PCH (Pacific Coast Highway), only ½ a block north of Main Beach and across
from the northern tip of Heisler Park. Yet, when you make your way onto the
property and eventually to your room you begin to see that The Tides Inn is not
a cookie cutter hotel. Here, retro charm abounds and you are welcomed with a
warm smile and greeted by name.
Linda and Dale uniquely
decorate each of the 21 rooms using a combination of finds from local businesses,
as well as repurposed and
up-cycled finds from local thrift stores. The rooms are bright, cheerful and
beachy with some unsuspecting comforts of home like books, classics and new
favorites all found at garage sales or thrift shops. Each room is also
outfitted with a flat screen TV. Ten of the rooms have large kitchenettes and
three have fully equipped kitchens. Linda and Dale have brought some of their
personal touches to each room with their favorite quotes painted on the walls
such as “Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air” and “Dreams
are necessary to life” and “Life itself is the proper binge.” All the artwork
in the rooms are created by local Laguna Beach artists, many of them personal
friends of Linda and Dale. In
fact, supporting the local businesses, including artists is of the upmost
importance to ownership. They are longtime Laguna Beach residents and have a
genuine love for this town. In the office some of the décor comes from Madison Square & Garden Cafe, the driftwood art pieces are from Coast Hardware and the colorful tiles on the outside walls were
handmade by Judy, the hotel Manager, at a Sawdust Studio Art Class.
While at The Tides Inn you
can also enjoy enjoy some outdoor amenities including a heated salt-water pool,
BBQ and fire pit. Linda finds that during the evenings in spring and summer, you
will find a few guests using the grill and there is always a crowd around the
fire pit sharing stories and a few good laughs.
Owners Dale and Linda, and
onsite Managers Joe and Judy are about the most hospitable people you’ll ever come across and with their eye for detail, design
and service, they have brought back the charm of the 1950s to The Tides Inn.

Sustainability plays a large role in the hotel's renovation, which includes all 70 guest rooms, the lobby, Pacific Room, Pacific Terrace, and the pool and pool deck. The renovation began February 29, 2012; the first two phases will be completed the week of April 22, with the third phase scheduled to be finished the first week of June.
Renovations:
- Guest rooms: The beach chic theme, both functional and reflective of an ocean front hotel, utilizes soothing warm colors, a mixture of bamboo and rattan furniture, and new carpet exuding a residential feel. Low VOC paint was used on the walls. Dual flush toilets and low flow, top-of-the-line, Speakman shower heads were installed in the bathrooms, along with new glass shower doors and 30% recycled material tiles throughout. There is also an in-room recycling program. A reusable aluminum water bottle is offered for guest purchase with an in-room refillable water station.
- Lobby: New furniture and fixtures.
- Pacific Room: This meeting space which accommodates up to 50 guests, has new furniture and carpet.
- Pacific Terrace on the 4th floor: New furniture and a fire pit.
- Pool Area and Deck: New red brick and a re-plastering of the pool with new pool tiles. (to be completed in phase 3)

Stepping Back in Time
Hotel Laguna was the first hotel in Laguna Beach, opening its doors over 100 years ago. The original structure burned down only 60 days after opening and was rebuilt in 1888. A more modern structure was built in 1928 and they re-opened their doors in 1930, as the structure that we know today. In 1985, Hotel Laguna was refurbished and became known to locals as the ‘Grand Old Lady.’
The hotel features several amenities that will make your stay convenient and comfortable. Home to two award-winning restaurants, Claes Ovation, a gourmet dining establishment with views of Main Beach, and OceanView Bar & Grill a casual dining spot with seating both inside and out. As part of the hotel, visit the exclusive bath and body shop, Bubbles of Laguna for gifts, bath salts and other souvenirs. There is also a section of the hotel lobby that has been recently transformed into an Art Gallery, ‘The Group of Four,’ highlighting four skillful southern California artists.
On my recent stay at the hotel, I thoroughly enjoyed taking a leisurely walk down the “Historic Hall” just off the lobby of the hotel. Here, the walls are lined with historic photos of Laguna Beach dating back as far as 1898. There are several photos of the Hotel from the ‘30s thru to present day. In some, you can see the old neon “Hotel Laguna” sign that used to sit up on the roof that I remember seeing as a kid. This was removed in 1996. I particularly enjoyed gazing at the photos of the hotel from the 1940s when it was the hideaway for the Hollywood elite including Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart. Along with the hotel photos, are memorable moments in Laguna history. You can find photos including the 1936 Laguna Beach Rose Parade float that won first place, a picture of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s motorcade on PCH in 1938, the old Laguna pier in 1927, pictures of the infamous Laguna greeter Eiler Larson and images of the world-renowned plein air painter, William Wendt at work. The historic hall is truly one of the gems of Laguna that you don’t want to miss.
Hotel Laguna offers a variety of accommodations for the perfect relaxing getaway, including mini suites, corner ocean front rooms, garden view and village view rooms and even connecting family suites. On my stay I enjoyed one of the mini suites that was spacious and had a walk-in closet, tub, and king size bed. The suite featured a flat screen TV and framed photography from the famous Pageant of the Masters. With any stay, guests can enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast, access to the full service private beach club, complimentary high-speed wireless Internet and valet parking at $10.00 per day.
Hotel Laguna is located right on the Pacific Ocean and is just steps from downtown restaurants and shops. With its European flare and long standing history, the ‘Grand Old Lady’ is the perfect escape for your next getaway.

Laguna Beach Becomes First to Partner Citywide with Clean the World
Now 22 hotels and lodging properties know that recycling soap to save lives is something they can all agree on.
The Laguna Beach Visitors & Conference Bureau (LBVCB) announced today that all of the hospitality industry lodging properties with 20 rooms or more in this picturesque, coastal Orange County city have partnered with Clean the World Global LLC, a social enterprise committed to saving lives and protecting our planet. Hospitality partners here will collect and recycle hotel soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions and gels to help fight the global spread of preventable diseases.
Laguna Beach has 18 hotel and lodging properties with 20 rooms or more and four properties with less than 20 rooms that have joined the Clean the World hospitality partnership program. These properties include Aliso Creek Inn, Art Hotel Laguna Beach, Best Western Plus Laguna Brisas Spa Hotel, Capri Laguna, Carriage House, Casa Laguna Inn, Crescent Bay Inn, Holiday Inn Laguna Beach, Hotel Laguna, Inn at Laguna Beach, La Casa del Camino, Laguna Beach Inn, Laguna Cliffs Inn, Laguna Riviera, Montage Laguna Beach, Pacific Edge Hotel, Seacliff Laguna Inn, Sunset Cove Villas, Surf & Sand Resort and Spa, The Tides Laguna Beach, The Retreat, and Travelodge Laguna Beach. The properties represent more than 1,200 guest rooms in Laguna Beach.
Clean the World has hospitality partnerships with more than 1,200 hotel properties throughout North America, including 143 partners in California. Clean the World’s California hospitality partners have contributed 70,329 lbs. of soap and 67,844 lbs. of bottled amenities since the organization’s founding in 2009. That equates to 375,088 bars (3 oz. apiece), which is enough to provide 75,018 children with enough soap for an entire month.
This program symbolizes the LBVCB’s hospitality partners ongoing commitment to sustainable and environmental programs, the reduction of hotel waste in local landfills, and the benefits of recycling hotel soaps and bottled amenities (shampoos, conditioners, lotions and gels) as hygiene products to benefit children and families in need.
Clean the World is the largest global recycler of hotel amenities, and in just two years of operation has distributed more than 9 million bars of soap to children and families in the United States, Canada and more than 45 countries worldwide, while also fulfilling a valuable environmental mission by diverting an estimated 600 tons of hotel waste from polluting landfills in the United States and Canada.
“We’re impressed by the efforts of Clean the World and wanted to show our support in a unique way by becoming the first citywide program to embrace its lifesaving mission,” says Judy Bijlani, President/CEO of the Laguna Beach Visitors & Conference Bureau. “Our seaside village is an inviting retreat for art lovers, environmentalists and beach enthusiasts, and the idea of recycling soaps and protecting our planet is something we wholeheartedly support.”
Each day 9,000 children around the world die from diseases such as acute respiratory illness and diarrheal diseases that can be prevented by washing with bar soap. Clean the World has a mission to put soap in the hands of people who need it most to improve hygiene and sanitation conditions to lessen the impact of disease and promote better hygiene and living conditions worldwide.
“Laguna Beach is Southern California’s premier seaside destination, and a city deserving of praise for its promotion of sustainability and social responsibility,” says Shawn Seipler, CEO and co-founder of Clean the World. “Our hotel partners in Laguna Beach should be applauded for their collaboration on this unique partnership and its distinction of being our first municipality to embrace Clean the World’s mission to recycle soap and save lives. I hope the efforts of the LBVCB will inspire other communities, municipalities and cities to do the same.”

The Perfect End to Summer…
It was one of those summer evenings in Laguna Beach that make you forget about all of the worries in life. It was the perfect night to head to Jazz Wednesdays at Hotel Laguna. Jazz Wednesdays are put on by Laguna Beach Live, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing excellent music to the Laguna Beach community.
Jazz Wednesdays are held June through September at the historic Hotel Laguna’s Rose Garden. Surrounded by blooming rose bushes and the ocean breeze, you won’t find a better place in Southern California to enjoy an evening jazz concert. This evening, the very talented Sal Cracchiolo and Melanie Jackson Quartet played the sounds of Latin Jazz. As I looked around I saw everyone grooving to the music. Toes were tapping and heads nodding to the beat. Melanie Jackson’s voice was incredible. I was amazed at how she brought the emotion of the music alive through her voice. And I don’t think you can find a better Latin Jazz trumpet player than Sal Cracchiolo. As the sun slowly set and the music filled the air, I took a deep breath and knew that this possibly could be the perfect way to end the summer.
Laguna Beach Live holds a variety of concerts throughout the year. In addition to Jazz Wednesdays, they host First Sundays (October-May), a free outdoor concert at Laguna College of Art + Design. They also feature Big Band concerts, and an annual music festival presented in conjunction with the Philharmonic Society.
Upcoming Events:
Semana Flamenka: Fiesta LagunaHappening on September 21 in the Hotel Laguna Rose Garden, this promises to be a magical evening of flamenco featuring selected artists from the Semana Flamenka ensembles, as well as other artists from around California.
